Prophets to Other Nations
• Jonah – 782 BC - Assyria
• Nahum – 664 BC - Assyria
• Obadiah – 848 BC - Edom
Jonah – 782 BC – Ninevah, Assyria
Assyria was a world power with incredible wealth and military influence. Ninevah was the capital city and was a very large city.
Jonah was originally a prophet to Israel – READ 2 Kings 14:25-27
Main Idea: God Gives Second Chances
• Ch 1-2 – God’s First Command
o 1:1-2; 1:3-4; 1:8-10; 1:12-17; 2:1; 2:7-10
• Ch 3-4 – God’s Second Command
o 3:1-5; 3:8-10; 4:1-3; 4:4-8; 4:9-11
Nahum – 664 BC – Ninevah, Assyria
Assyria – about 120 years after Jonah went to Ninevah and saw a great revival, the people had turned away from God. They were even worse than before. They had brutally captured Israel and taken them captive. Ninevah was an even stronger military power. City walls were impenetrable (believed to be 50 feet thick and 100 feet tall). Located on the Tigris River and there was a local legend that the city could not be destroyed until the river became its enemy (probably had its origin in the prophecy of Nahum).
This is a message about the judgment that God would bring to Ninevah, and a message to bring comfort to Judah that God will not let the evil go unpunished. In 612 BC Ninevah fell to Babylon.

Obadiah – 848 BC – Edom
Edom (Esau), brother nation to Israel (Jacob) took advantage during a Philistine and Arabian attack on Israel. God was announcing the judgment coming to Edom for the sins against their brother Israel.
